Gumtree needs to step up against scams. We came dangerously close to losing everything—just one click away. A woman posing as a local buyer contacted me to arrange collection for an item. She then sent me a link to what appeared to be Nextdoor, claiming she had paid £600. I followed the link to retrieve the funds, but my account details didn’t work. She persuaded me to set up a Revolut bank account, which I did (Revolut itself is legitimate). However, the link to Nextdoor was fake. The woman’s messages were incredibly convincing. Thankfully, my wife noticed something was off in time. Even now, I feel sick thinking about it. I managed to send her one final message about making better life choices. Don’t make the same mistake I did—stay vigilant!
